How does the Ellipse SWT pigmented lesion treatment work?
Ellipse treatment works by directing pulses of light into the epidermis. The light is absorbed by melanin which is concentrated in the pigmented lesions. Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the keratinocatos in which the melanin is stored. This technique is called “Selective Photothermolysis”. A large number of men and women all over the world suffer from disorders of the blood vessels (vascular lesions). These can be of various types, from small telangiectasias (sometimes called spider veins or broken veins) to large Port Wine Stains.
Some lesions are present from birth, while others develop with age, or as the result of environmental damage (such as sun exposure). This heat is transferred to the walls of the blood vessels, which are permanently damaged and removed by the body’s own defence mechanism. How does the Ellipse SWT laser hair removal treatment work?
To achieve long lasting or permanent hair removal, it is necessary to destroy the hair follicle from which individual hairs grow. Controlled pulses of light penetrate the epidermis and are absorbed by melanin in the hair contained in the follicle.
Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred to the hair follicle, which is destroyed, making it unable to produce a new hair. Hair in the resting (telogen stage) are treated later. The treatment is only effective on growing hairs as these are still attached to the follicle. This technique is called “Selective Photothermolysis”.

How does an Nd:YAG laser work on onychomycosis?
The exact mechanism of nail fungus (onychomycosis) treatment is not totally known. Heating the fungus is one major factor, but introducing a sub-millisecond pulse adds a “photo-acoustic” effect to the treatment, weakening the cell structure of the fungus. A series of flashes of infrared light is aimed across the whole nail, including the nail folds (the skin immediately surrounding the sides and base of the nail). This heats up and destroys the fungus that is present.

Vascular Treatments by Nd:YAG
For leg veins and other vascular lesions. Vascular lesions are normal veins that have dilated under the influence of increased venous pressure. The Ellipse Nd:YAG is also ideal for facial telangiectasias; especially around the nose. Venous lakes are easily treated and the Nd:YAG is perfect for the clearance of those port wine stains which are resistant to other light based and systemic treatments.

How does an Nd:YAG laser work?
To clear leg veins, the vessels must be constricted. A 1064 nm wavelength Nd:YAG laser sends energy into the blood and vessel walls, where it is absorbed by blood. Red blood cells are heated, causing met-haemoglobin formation and greater absorption. This causes microclotting and heating of the vessel wall, leading to complete or partial collapse. The constricted vessel then degenerates, and the visible leg veins disappear from the surface of the skin.
How does an Nd:YAG laser work on leg veins?
Treating vascular conditions in general is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis performed with a single pulse.
The ideal immediate response to treatment with vascular laser is coagulation of the vessel with no other apparent effect. This effect can be observed in the form of bluish or greyish discolouration visible on the skin surface. In leg veins, blanching or disappearance of the vessel may occur.
Why is the Nd:YAG laser better than SWT for treatment of leg veins?
Leg vessels are normally deep, which is why Nd:YAG in most cases respond better than other light based treatments. SWT is good for treatment of very superficial small vessels or blanching after sclerotherapy. Note that lasers or light can only be used 1 month post sclerotherapy.
Ellipse uses an Nd.YAG laser to provide a fast effective treatment of resistant warts (those which do not respond to other treatment methods).
An intense beam of infrared light is used to heat and destroy the wart tissue. A local anaesthetic may be given depending on the number and location of the warts.
A single burst of light is enough for smaller warts, whereas larger ones – such as plantar or mosaic warts found on the soles of the feet – may require multiple shots to ensure the whole area is treated. To assist the light to penetrate the skin, any callus or area of dead skin present will be thinned out using a razor or scalpel, and a thin layer of optical coupling gel will be applied.
The facts about warts
A wart is a skin growth caused by some types of the virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV). Most warts go away on their own within months or years; 50% disappear in 18 months or less. Their removal can be speeded up by using silver nitrate solution or salicyclic acid, or by freezing. The over-the-counter freezing kits using CO2 are not as effective as having a treatment using liquid nitrogen in a doctor’s practice.
If the treatment methods above are not successful the wart is classified as recalcitrant and is suitable for Ellipse Wart Treatment.
